Description
Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang is a core formula for resolving Blood Stasis in the epigastric and abdominal regions. Traditionally, it treats sharp, fixed abdominal pain and palpable masses due to stasis and Qi stagnation. In modern utilization, it is applied to digestive, hepatic, and gynecological disorders involving chronic pain, masses, or congestion below the diaphragm.
Traditional Indications
Formulated for abdominal, rib-side, and/or breast distention and pain, conglomerations and gatherings, fixed, severe, and/or piercing pain, concretions and accumulations, externally visible engorged veins and venules (e.g., varicosities and hemangiomas.)
Typical symptoms include:
- Dark or purplish complexion, lips, or tongue
- Distention, fullness, or discomfort in the chest and hypochondrium
- Fixed, stabbing, or sharp abdominal or epigastric pain
- Noticeable abdominal masses or clumping
Modern Clinical Applications
Abdominal tumors, hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, dysmeorrhea, amenorrhea, irregular menstrustion, and hiatal hernia.
Commonly applied in contemporary use for:
- Chronic abdominal pain with Qi and Blood stagnation
- Chronic gastritis, peptic ulcers, or liver/gallbladder disorders with stasis
- Endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, or pelvic masses with Blood Stasis presentation
